English-speaking psychiatrist in Taiwan.
Care that crosses cultures.
We are a psychiatrist practice in Zhongli, Taoyuan. We offer consultations in Mandarin, English and Cantonese. We provide medication management and rTMS for insomnia, anxiety, depression and panic disorder. We also help with adjustment difficulties common among expats and international patients.
About Dr. Tam
I'm Dr. Tam Win Hong, a board-certified psychiatrist practicing in Zhongli, Taoyuan. I trained in psychiatry at Cathay General Hospital.
My practice serves the greater Taoyuan area, including a steady caseload of expats and international patients who feel more comfortable speaking with their psychiatrist in English or Cantonese. I treat insomnia, anxiety, depression, panic disorder, ADHD, addictions and other psychiatric conditions.
Understanding is where treatment begins.
During consultations with patients, I prioritize careful listening and precise differential diagnosis. I don't over-medicate, and I don't delay treatment that's needed. For patients who haven't responded well to medication, or who prefer to avoid long-term pharmacotherapy, I evaluate suitability for rTMS, a non-invasive brain stimulation therapy.
I also write extensively on psychiatry for the general public, translating clinical concepts into plain language. If anything you read here resonates, I'd be glad to continue the conversation at the clinic.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions from international patients before their first visit. If yours isn't here, you're welcome to ask in clinic.
Is the consultation actually conducted in English?
Yes. Dr. Tam consults fluently in English, Mandarin and Cantonese. You do not need to bring a translator and you do not need to speak Chinese to be seen.
If you prefer, you can also email a written summary in advance and continue the conversation in clinic.
Can I use Taiwan National Health Insurance (NHI) for psychiatric care?
Yes. If you hold an ARC and an active NHI card, psychiatric consultations and most medications are covered under standard NHI rates.
Without an NHI card, you can still be seen on a self-pay basis. If you forget your card, the clinic typically allows you to return within seven days to apply NHI retroactively.
Will my visit be visible to my employer or visa sponsor?
No. Medical records are protected under Taiwan's Personal Data Protection Act. Employers, schools and visa sponsors have no right to access your psychiatric records.
If you would prefer that no record be created in the NHI cloud system at all, you may opt for a fully self-pay consultation. Note that prescriptions for controlled medications still require NHI verification.
What should I bring for my first appointment?
Your NHI card if you have one, your ARC or passport, and any prior psychiatric records, prescription bottles or pharmacy slips you have on hand.
A few notes about what brings you in are also welcome. Many patients find it easier to write down their concerns in advance.
What does a first consultation feel like?
The first visit focuses on listening, careful history-taking and forming an accurate diagnosis. Medication is discussed only after we both understand the picture.
You will not be rushed into pharmacotherapy. If a non-medication approach is appropriate, we discuss that too, including rTMS for selected cases.
Will I become dependent on psychiatric medication?
Mainstream antidepressants such as SSRIs are not addictive. Sleep medications and benzodiazepines are prescribed cautiously and reviewed regularly.
My goal is for patients to complete a course of treatment and taper off, not to remain on medication for life.
I have already tried rTMS, ECT, even Esketamine at other clinics, and nothing has worked. Can you still help?
Yes. The first step is often to revisit the diagnosis. In my clinical experience, some patients who were treated as unipolar depression for years were actually living with bipolar disorder. That can explain why even intensive treatment never really held.
It has been a long road. We can take another careful look together.
Can a family member or friend join the consultation?
Yes, especially for the first visit. Many international patients find it helpful to have a partner or close friend present. We can also conduct part of the visit in private if needed.
Are remote or telehealth consultations available?
If you would like to discuss a telehealth option, please send Dr. Tam a message and we can review your specific situation.
How do I make my first appointment?
For English-language booking, the easiest path is the Ten-Chan General Hospital English portal: tcmg.com.tw/en.
You may also send Dr. Tam a message if you have questions before booking, or if you prefer to discuss timing and language preferences first.
